ASQ Lean Methods of Improvement 1-Day Course Plymouth Meeting Area (QM310-3)

Instructor: Roy Kinkaid ASQ RU: 0.8 Prerequisite: None required but an understanding of quality tools helpful.
Lean – a methodology for identifying non-value added activities and waste in all sectors: manufacturing, service, health care, education and non-profit.
Proposed Benefits: Lean is a structured methodology, often associated with Six Sigma (a process improvement methodology) that identifies opportunities for reducing waste, and non-value added activities, reducing costs and improving process throughput. In this one-day session participants will learn to apply the methodology to effect improvement.
ASQ definition: Producing the maximum sell-able product or services at the lowest operational cost. MIT definition: Its goal (Lean) is to incorporate less human effort, less inventory, less time to develop products and less space to become highly responsive to customer demand while producing top quality/service in the most efficient and economical manner possible.
Participants will learn to:
- Identify a process (opportunity) for improvement
write a clear statement of the problem to be worked on
- Set a goal for improvement and a time frame for achieving the goal
- Calculate potential cost savings
- Stages of a successful team
- Identify process data available and process data needed
- Analyze data (data – information – knowledge – improvement)
- Create process maps that are part of the Lean methodology
- Perform root cause analysis
- Implement a control plan to maintain gains
Tools included in the training:
- Lean tools: Process Mapping, Swim Lane Mapping, Value Stream Map, SIPOC and 5S.
- Basic quality tools to include: data analysis tools – Mean, Range, Standard Deviation, Trend Chart, Pareto, Fishbone Diagram, 5
- Whys and Cost of Quality.
Please bring your laptop. Materials will be distributed via USB Flash Drive at the session. We are going paperless.
Class Types Available:
Classroom Based: A public class (must have a minimum of 6 paying students) is held for one (1) day with eight (8) hours of instruction (two breaks and lunch).
On-Site Based: As an on-site class (for your organization only, minimum of 6 students) the class can be held for one (1) day with eight (8) hours of instruction (two breaks and lunch provided by the organization) or five (5) days – five (4) hour sessions per day of application to a process (problem area) selected by the organization.

About the instructor: Roy Kinkaid is an independent consultant (25+ years’ experience) with an extensive background in the implementation of various quality management systems – Lean/Six Sigma, Baldrige, Continuous Improvement and Total Quality Management.
Roy has a degree in management, statistics, from Jefferson University, is a Six Sigma Black Belt, Baldrige Examiner, and a senior member of the ASQ.
He has process improvement experience in manufacturing, service, non-profit, education, and healthcare, helping organizations to achieve six sigma levels of quality. Roy has hands on experience with change management, coaching and facilitation skills necessary to implement a quality program. He has extensive experience working in Europe, the UK and Asia.
